BITATURE FOR THE FIRST TIME… Continued
I was so eager to
meet this great man. Hence, even before his sister could do the formal
connection, I went to his office uninvited. At that time, I was a young boy who
had completed university 3 years earlier; I hadn’t learnt some of the
principles of networking such as seeking an appointment. Well, I reached his
office and while I was trying to bargain with his personal assistant to allow
me see him, Bitature overheard the conversation and instructed his assistant to
allow me in. As I entered, he stood up and welcomed me with his enchanting wide
smile.
It is said that there is no second
chance to make the first impression. This is a man who knows how to make
the first impression the best impression. The first impression I got of him was
that he is a very down-to-earth man. How could he happily welcome someone he
had never seen before or even heard of? That was my first lesson from Bitature
– to be successful I need to be humble and hospitable. Those of you who
know me can attest to my signature smile – this is where and how it all
started.
It was also on that day
that I ejected out of my mind the crippling belief that successful people are
inapproachable. Here I was, being welcomed by one of the richest entrepreneurs
in Africa, even when I had bumped into his office without an appointment. That
was my second lesson – successful people are not inapproachable; this is
a lie that some people use to justify their fear of taking a step to network
with such successful people.
Inside Bitature’s
office, the ambiance was inspiring. The set-up was neat. There were a few
portraits of inspiring figures and some inspiring quotes. “Sir, I am Robert
Bake Tumuhaise. I am a writer. I have one book on the market and I have
finished writing the second one. I would love you to be the guest of honour as
we launch it. And I would like you to be my mentor because I have heard a lot
of good things about you,” I introduced myself and quickly hit the point for
which I had come to see him, knowing that successful people are so busy.
“Young man, I admire your courage. It is
rare to see a young person like you boldly coming to me and asking me to mentor
him. For this reason, I will come and launch your book and I will always honour
all your future invitations. And of course, I am going to be your mentor.” His
response was fast and straightforward. He did not take even a minute to make
the decision regarding my two-fold request. That was my third lesson from
Bitature on that very first day of meeting him – successful people value
time; they make quick decisions; they do not waste your time; they either
say “Yes” or “No.” That day, I left Bitature’s office feeling bigger and taller
than I came, inspirationally speaking.
